Addis Petros at Sher Federal democratic republic of ethiopia where she worked equally a harvester until 2019. Looking back at her life inspires both awe and disbelief in Addis Petros. The 2019 graduate of Fairtrade'south Women'southward School of Leadership says her transformation in the last two years is as unbelievable as it is enormous.

Addis, 28, grew up in the southern part of central Ethiopia in the Oromia region. In her domicile region, poverty, illiteracy and insecurity are rife. In this patriarchal society, women are economically marginalized. Rural women, especially, remain peasants all their lives. Like every girl in her community, Addis was destined for this life.

A former employee of Sher Flowers, Addis had worked hither for five years since 2014 when she was selected as one of the women to participate in the Women'southward School of Leadership. Supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland through Fairtrade Finland, and ALDI UK, the programme works to empower female flower subcontract workers in different areas of their lives such as leadership and business. It is Addis' involvement in the program that would alter the trajectory of her life for better.

"One of the elements taught in the course is financial literacy. I was impulsive in my expenditure before. But at present I'one thousand able to develop business organization plans and to manage my finances more prudently,'' she says.

But the biggest discovery she has made from the grooming is the power of small money. ''I assumed I needed a lot of money to start something meaningful. This training corrected this erroneous notion,'' she adds.

While Addis was e'er a good planner, the training gave her the nudge to concretize her fiscal goals. It also made her more than ambitious.

''After the course, I was able to showtime a craven rearing business concern at home with simply small capital letter. 1 year on, the business organisation continues to flourish,'' she says, adding that the investment has empowered her financially.

The bearing of her life may have inverse. Still Addis is non stopping at that. She's imparting her leadership skills to other women to make them self-reliant and to give back to her customs.

''I train those who rear chicken how to do information technology profitably as I have. Many have started giving more attention to their birds, growing their incomes as a consequence. With the right skills, poultry farming is fairly inexpensive but lucrative besides.''

Addis is tackling illiteracy likewise, which is fueled past among other factors, poverty and culture. "Many women here are hesitant to go to school because they don't believe it's possible to study and to attend to domestic chores at the aforementioned time.''

''I've been transformed, both intellectually and in terms of my attitude. Today, I am more self-aware and confident than I used to be,'' she adds.

Her vision as a young adult female? To go on learning and to grow her business organisation. ''I am determined to inspire women to learn and to invest.''

About the Nobility for All (D4A) Project

Dignity For All (D4A) – Finnish Funded Flowers Impact Project is funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of finland (MFA-Finland), Swedish Postcode Lottery through Fairtrade Sweden and British commercial partner, Aldi UK. The projection is implemented past Fairtrade Africa (FTA) with support from Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Clan (EHPEA), Ethiopian Middle for Inability Development (ECDD), Abilis Foundation and Abilis Foundation. The overall project objective is to create dignified livelihood opportunities for flower farm workers in Ethiopia. The purpose of the project is improved terms, weather condition and rights for workers in the six flower farms in Federal democratic republic of ethiopia.

The project's priority areas include: mature relations at the workplace, strengthened merchandise unions, gender equality, occupational health and safe practices and inclusive workplace. The Women's Schoolhouse of Leadership (WSOL) is implemented under the Gender Equality colonnade. It seeks to empower female flower farm workers to take up leadership roles and both subcontract and community levels. Further, information technology equips them with skills to earn better wages through training on Alternative Income Generating Activities (AIGAs).
